Conservation Guide

***APPLICANTS OFFERED A POSITION WILL BEGIN WORK ON OR ABOUT OCTOBER 28TH, 2024.***

Company Overview

Skyline Hawai‘i is a Maui-based eco-tourism company that offers zipline tours and vehicle tours of Haleakalā National Park. We established the first commercial zipline in the United States and are one of the most awarded tour companies in Hawai‘i.

As a company, we are also passionate about conservation. In addition to donating more than $1.8 million to local environmental and conservation nonprofits, since 2002 we have worked diligently to restore a native Hawaiian forest at Pōhakuokalā Gulch, planting more than 20,000 native trees and plants, and reintroducing 38 native species to the area.

Job Description

The Conservation Guide position blends two unique roles – Conservation Technician and Zipline Guide. Skyline Conservation Guides spend approximately half the year working in each role. This hybrid position is perfect for those who enjoy adventure and working outdoors and are motivated to steward and care for our unique island home.

Conservation Technician. Skyline’s Conservation Technicians engage in a wide range of conservation-related projects, including planting native trees, land clearing, invasive species control, fence construction and maintenance, and community education. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Native plant identification, seed collection, propagation, and outplanting. Our Conservation Technicians hike – often to remote locations – to identify and collect seeds from native trees and plants growing in the wild. We process the seeds, grow them at a native nursery, and outplant native species at the Pōhakuokalā Gulch restoration area.
  • Conservation fence construction and maintenance. Skyline Conservation Technicians are taught how to build and maintain game fences, essential for protecting native ecosystems from invasive animals like pigs and deer.
  • Invasive species control. Our Conservation Technicians identify invasive plant species and use both chemical and mechanical means to control their spread.
  • Land clearing and working around heavy equipment. Our Conservation Technicians learn basic chainsaw safety, procedures for operating safely around heavy machinery, and basic knot tying and rigging skills.
  • On occasion, our Conservation Technicians engage in special projects, including camping on other islands and helicopter operations into remote forest areas. (Helicopter safety training and all flight and camping gear are provided, with per diems as necessary).

Zipline Guide. Our Zipline Guides offer guests a safe, exciting, and enriching experience at one of our two Maui zipline courses. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring safety of guests. Our Zipline Guides ensure guests are properly fitted with harnesses and helmets, conduct daily inspections of course hardware and equipment, and operate tours in accordance with company safety guidelines.
  • Educating guests. Skyline Zipline Guides help guests appreciate key aspects of Hawai'i’s unique ecosystem and history. (We will provide relevant training and guides are expected to relay this knowledge to guests).
  • Demonstrating the highest levels of customer service. Our Zipline Guides operate their tours with the utmost professionalism and treat their guests with respect and generosity.
  • Course and equipment maintenance. Zipline Guides will assist with course maintenance, to include trail improvement and mowing, and will clean, sanitize, and organize all safety gear and equipment.

Requirements

  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Professional demeanor toward members of the community and Skyline Hawai'i teammates.
  • Ability and willingness to perform physically challenging work in harsh conditions for 8 hours per day. Work will include hiking in muddy and uneven terrain, hiking at high elevations with a 35-lb pack, and heavy manual labor (e.g., pounding fence posts).
  • Ability and willingness to follow directions and work independently.
  • Strict adherence to policies and protocols related to safety, sanitation, and PPE.
  • Current driver’s license.
  • Ability and willingness to safely drive company vehicles, to include 4x4 work trucks and 15-passenger tour vans.
  • No requirement for any prior conservation-related training. We conduct extensive in-house training.

Benefits

  • Starting base income of $18/hour (not including tips when working as Zipline Guide).
  • Additional pay depending on qualifications and training.
  • Full individual medical and dental insurance (with at least 80 hours work/month).
  • 401(k) with 4% company match.
  • Paid Time Off and paid community service days.
  • Robust paid training program in both conservation and zipline operations.
