The Driver Helper/SpotterMilitary (Driver Helper) rides in and/or escorts the vehicle and assists the CDL Driver (Driver). The Driver Helper is responsible for spotting the driver, assists by pulling out and returning bins from refuse collection areas. The position assists the Driver by directing the Driver from the ground. The Driver Helper will assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle, as well as on the route and in the work area.
Your daily performance will be observed by customers and the public. Your job helps to keep streets, neighborhoods, and communities safe and clean.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Driver Helper rides along designated commercial routes to mechanically/manually collect municipal solid waste, recycled material, and/or construction/demolition waste and take it to the various disposal sites on Oahu.
Driver Helper is responsible for ground guiding trucks or equipment at the job site regardless of Drivers view of the working area and hazards.
Must give clear and understandable signals. If necessary, communicate with the driver beforehand to ensure that you both understand the meaning of a signal.
Tracks all applicable activity with a tablet, issued by the Company, and as instructed.
Able to follow safe operating practices, including lock-out/ tag-out procedures to ensure truck is inoperative when working in the truck body.
Monitors vehicle loads to detect loose debris, debris falling onto truck during operation. Visually scans customer site before and after dumping to prevent any accidents/incidents.
Interact professionally with customers and/or the general public along the route to answer questions or respond to requests.
Notifies supervisor of issues requiring management action.
Maintains and submits a daily route sheet and delivery tags.
SUPPORTIVE FUNCTION
In addition to performing the essential functions, this position is required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions.
Maintains consistent awareness to assist the Driver during movement of the vehicle or transporting back to the base yard or next location.
Cleans/pick-up loose trash off of truck and/or ground surrounding truck and bin, that spills during dumping process, to maintain clean customer site and safety along roads and highways.
Knowledge of the truck and its components, and the basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
Able to use a tablet and GPS to locate service addresses.
Able to learn and use interpersonal skills relating to good customer service.
Does not abuse vehicles through poor driving habits and maintain a clean vehicle, reporting any and all damages, service, and excessive wear issues to your supervisor immediately.
Performing all other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS
The noise level in the work environment will range from moderate to extreme.
Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, and climbing in & out of vehicle.
May require working under minimal supervision.
Exposure to dust and outside working conditions.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to body motion, to include 50 lbs.+.
This position requires full range of bending at the waist and full use of all extremities and back muscles. Requires ability to push/pull and maneuver Bins as needed.
Stamina and flexibility to maintain a steady work pace.
WORK HOURS
Start time is 5:00 am, 6 days a week, Monday-Saturday, 40hr week +/-, actual hours can change.

Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and overtime based on Operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENS
Skills/Knowledge:
Knowledge of the island of Oahu
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to grasp, lift and /or carry, or otherwise 50 lbs.
Education/Experience:
Completion of a high school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of experience and training
1-2 years’ experience (preferred, not required)
REQUIREMENTS
Must have reliable transportation to work.
Requires maintaining a reliable work schedule.
Ability to learn Spotter signals and training and demonstrate proper use in the field.
Part of the requirements for this position involve access to military bases, which necessitates passing a background check.
