Diesel Mechanic - Level I

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Our Heavy-duty/Diesel Mechanic diagnose and performs repair and maintenance work on diesel and non-diesel equipment and trucks including, but not limited to, chassis components, vehicle refuse bodies and control systems, hydraulic electrical, air brake systems, general engine work, HVAC components, suspension, drive train and steering systems. May perform basic tire work, such as replacement, tire rotation, and tread depth checks. Considerable independent judgement is exercised in performing the daily functions of the position.

Supervision of Level II and Level III Mechanics.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Chassis component repair and maintenance.
  • Engine repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform basic inspections with limited supervision in some (not all required) of the following heavy truck, or automotive systems: suspensions & steering; general engine, transmissions, brakes, electrical, hydraulics, drivetrain, diesel emissions.
  • Completes all issued Repair Orders & Service Orders as assigned.
  • Refuse bodies, including control, hydraulic and electrical systems, and air and hydraulic braking systems.
  • Perform road service calls to help colleagues during emergency breakdowns.
  • Suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems.
  • Heating and air conditioning repair.
  • Performs line maintenance welding and fabrication.
  • Safely provides road service when necessary to ensure that the Company’s equipment is returned to operation in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Identifies the source of the malfunctions using a variety of electronic tools.
  • Completes applicable Company training programs.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.

In addition to performing the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the Supervisor, based on operational needs.

  WORKING CONDITIONS

 

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of what an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

 

  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) most of the workday.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 75 pounds most of the workday.
  • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals.) often.
  • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements often.
  • This position requires full range of bending at the waist and full use of all extremities and back muscles.
  • Stamina and flexibility to maintain a steady work pace.

 

WORK HOURS

 

  • Start time varies from 2:30am to 12pm, Monday-Sunday, 40hr week +/-, actual hours can change.

  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and overtime based on Operational needs.

 

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS
  • Requires verbal and written communication with supervisor, coworker, and others.
  • Read, write, and comprehend in English.
  • Must be able to communicate using tablets, phones or other devices as required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Understanding of work order labor time standards.
  • Experience with maintenance work to be performed on Classes 1-5 light/medium duty and heavy-duty Class 7-8 trucks.
  • Knowledge of Class 8 vehicles

Education/Experience:

  • CDL B
  • 5-7 years experience bumper to bumper diagnostic and equipment repairs.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (T1-T8)
